Founder Emeritus

Dr. Evans and Richard J. Blattner founded Charles Evans & Associates (CE&A), the predecessor to the Evans Analytical Group® (EAG), in the fall of 1978.

The first instrument put into service was the #3 CAMECA IMS-3f. The company grew rapidly and in the early 1980s, Dr. Evans led the company into contract research and the development of CAMECA related software and hardware accessories. CE&A later successfully developed one of the five TOF-SIMS designs in the marketplace.

Dr. Evans partnered with Drs. Charles Magee and William Harrington and Mr. Ephraim Botnick to form Evans East and with Dr. Sukanta Biswas to form Evans Europa/Cascade Scientific Ltd. thus establishing the foundation for today’s global EAG network.

In 1999, CE&A was sold to Physical Electronics and Drew became the Chief Technology Office responsible for Contract Research activity. He left the company in 2002 to later start a company devoted to the analysis of full, unbroken wafers. Today Dr. Evans and the full wafer analytical capability are part of EAG.

Dr. Evans earned his BA (1964) and PhD (1968) in Chemistry from Cornell University. After that he joined the Ledgemont Laboratory of Kennecott Copper Corporation where he provided analytical services and performed research on Spark Source Mass Spectrometry and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry.

In 1970, he joined the research staff as Senior Research Chemist in the Materials Research Laboratory of the University of Illinois and supervised the analytical services laboratory in the MRL. Subsequently he was promoted to Principle Research Chemist and appointed to Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry.

His University of Illinois experience brought him into contact with many of the analytical techniques that were later successfully commercialized by CE&A and now the Evans Analytical Group.

Dr. Evans has over 150 peer reviewed publications in the analytical sciences and materials science.
